The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) exam is a national level examination aimed at identifying talented students from economically weaker sections and incentivizing them with scholarships for their secondary level education.

Students studying in Class 8th of a government or aided school, whose parental income is not more than ₹1,50,000 per annum, and who have secured at least 55% marks or equivalent in Class 7th (5% relaxation for SC/ST students) are eligible to apply.

Applications can typically be filled out online through the official website of the Punjab School Education Board or the National Scholarship Portal. Schools may also assist students with the application process.

The NMMS exam consists of two parts: the Mental Ability Test (MAT) and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Each part contains 90 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 90 minutes.

Students need to score at least 40% in each test (MAT and SAT) to qualify. For students from reserved categories (SC/ST), the qualifying score is 32% in each test.

Qualified candidates receive a scholarship of ₹12,000 per annum from Class 9 up to Class 12.

The scholarship is disbursed quarterly into the bank account of the eligible students through Direct Bank Transfer (DBT).

No, the NMMS exam can only be taken once by a student when they are in Class 8.

Students can prepare using PSEB/NCERT textbooks and other study materials focused on reasoning, mental ability, and class 7th and 8th syllabus of Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics.
